healthy eyes

Mother’s Day is less than two weeks away – the holiday falls on Sunday, May 10, 2020 – and while the day may look a little different this year, there are still plenty of ways to show your mom or significant other how much you love and appreciate them.

Whether you are miles away or right around the corner, you can plan a virtual celebration, complete with a fun activity. You can also send the special women in your life electronic gift cards that they can use later, which is a great way to support local businesses, by the way. Another idea is to provide her with thoughtful gifts, such as glasses that will ease eye strain, to help her maintain healthy eyes.

The History of Mother’s Day

Mother’s Day is celebrated annually on the second Sunday of May. It is a day in which you can express your love and appreciation for your mom with cards, flowers, and gifts. However, according to History.com, there is more to the national holiday than presents.

The day was created by Anna Jarvis, daughter of Ann Reeves Jarvis, in 1908 and became an official holiday six years later. Jarvis “conceived of Mother’s Day as a way of honoring the sacrifices mothers made for their children” (History.com, 2020).

Before these events, Jarvis’s mother organized “Mothers’ Friendship Day” in 1868, along with various activities and clubs dedicated to mothers. You can read more about the history of Mother’s Day at www.history.com.

Brighten Mom’s Day with These Gift Ideas

An E-Reader

If your mom likes to read before bed, you can order her an e-reader. Look for a model that features an integrated warm light that she can adjust, manually or automatically, to prevent eye strain. The battery life on electronic readers are also rated in weeks rather than hours or days. You could add to the gift by including a gift card that she can redeem for her favorite type of e-books.

Matte Screen Filter

An excellent gift for moms who are remotely working and homeschooling, matte screen filters help reduce glare, preventing digital eye strain. Doing this subsequently helps reduce any associated symptoms that she may experience such as headaches, dry eyes, or blurry vision. You can find anti-glare screen filters, with or without privacy features, at an affordable price from several online sources.

Schedule an Eye Exam for Her

Let your mom know that you care and want to make sure she maintains healthy eyes by scheduling a comprehensive eye exam with the Eye Physicians of North Houston at (281) 893-1760. The ophthalmologists at Eye Physicians of North Houston are committed to providing compassionate, state-of-the-art medical and surgical eye care to residents throughout Houston and the surrounding communities of Texas.
